Latex Care Guide

Latex Care Guide

Latex is a striking, versatile material that adds a bold edge to any wardrobe. To keep it looking its best, though, proper care is essential, as latex is delicate and needs special attention.

Some of the most common questions we hear include: "How do I get that high-gloss shine on latex?", "What’s the best soap for cleaning it?" and "What should I avoid to prevent damage?"

To help you maintain your latex pieces and extend their lifespan, we've put together some care tips. After exploring our guide, be sure to browse our stunning collection of latex clothing!

WASHING:

Latex Rubber Garments should be washed in warm, clean water with light and unscented antibacterial soap. Avoid harsh chemicals and detergents. Fill a tub or bucket with lukewarm water, add 1-2 pumps of gentle cleanser, and wash the Latex thoroughly. Rinse well with fresh water, add a couple of teaspoons of silicone polish to the tub, and submerge the Latex garment. Once the Latex feels slippery to the touch (both inside and out), hang it on a plastic or wooden hanger to drip dry in the air. Drying your Latex should be via air dry ONLY. If light patches appear, do not be alarmed. It means the garment is not completely dry yet. After washing, the Latex garment might stick to itself. Fix this by using more silicone polish or Talcum powder.

*DO NOT DRY CLEAN OR MACHINE DRY*

POLISHING:

Now that the Latex has been washed and dried, it’s time to polish it. While wearing your garment, spray or gently rub the silicone lube into the Latex with a dust-free, ultra-soft cloth or fingers using small, circular motions. Latex can be permanently scratched if you attempt to polish it with a hard and/or dry cloth, so take care that your cloth does not dry out when polishing. Distribute the product evenly and reapply as needed for maximum shine. Alternatively, you can dip-shine. For this method, add your silicone polish to a tub of fresh water after washing, soak the garment, then hang it to dry. This is the preferred method for polishing multiple garments at once- the inside will be lubricated and the outside will have an excellent shine.

STORING:

When storing your Latex, you’ll want to keep it in a cool, dry, and dark place. Avoid humidity, direct sunlight, and heat sources, as they can damage the Latex and create mold. Keep each piece separated in a plastic garment bag lightly coated with Talc powder for protection. Place white tissue paper between the Latex and any metal fastenings or buttons to prevent staining. Moisturize your Latex with polish to prevent the garment from drying out and becoming stiff or brittle over time.

WEARING:

To put on your Latex garment, rub or spray silicone polish on the inside of your garment, or directly onto your skin (a little goes a long way). Some people prefer to apply the lubricant via spray so the product doesn't come into contact with their hands. If opting for this method, put down a towel to protect your floor and prevent slipping. You could also use Talcum powder, and apply the powder to the inside of the garment or directly onto the skin. It’s best to avoid perfumed talcum powder. The powder on the outside of latex will make it appear matte or dull- that’s OK. If you want to restore your Latex’s luster, simply polish it with silicone lubricant. Forcing the garment on without aid may cause the latex to tear.

What is Talcum Powder?

Talcum powder is made from talc, a natural mineral. It absorbs moisture, cuts down friction, and is often used to prevent skin rashes. If you cannot find Talc, you could also use Baby powder or Cornstarch.

EXTRA TIPS:

  • Do NOT use an oil-based lubricant, it will break down the Latex material.
  • Do NOT tumble dry, Iron, or dry clean your Latex garments.
  • Keep away from heat and flames- Latex burns easily.
  • Metals like Copper, Brass, & Bronze will stain your Latex, use caution when handling coins and such.
  • If you have long fingernails, you may want to use light cotton gloves when polishing your Latex to avoid possible markings and fingernail damage.
