Sex Toy Materials Guide

With the wide array of sex toy materials available on the market today, it can be hard to navigate your way to your new toy.  Honey has created a guide to help you navigate through the array of materials to make an informed (and most satisfying) decision!

Terms:
Non-porous: Not permeable to water, bacteria, viruses, or other fluids like lubricants and personal body fluids.
Phthalates: Softeners added to some toys to make them more pliable. They are unstable and will break down over time.
Clean: Get rid of most surface bacteria
Disinfect: To get rid of all microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and viruses
Surface Drag: Friction between the material and the skin that makes contact less smooth

Soft Materials:
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is one of the most widely used materials in sex toys today because of its ability to be firm or soft and the variety of colors available. It is durable, latex free, not expensive, and compatible with all types of lubricant. It can be cleaned with soap and warm water but is often porous which makes it hard to disinfect. Depending on the state of the PVC, it might also contain phthalates, so be sure to double-check the package before you purchase the toy.  Our favorite phthalate-free PVC toys are the Aqua Rabbit Dual Action Vibrator and the Purple Plunge Vibrator.  PVC toys should always be stored in their own bag not touching any other toys.

TPE/TPR (Thermoplastic elastomer/rubber) is a soft material used in a variety of toys because it is flexible and durable. It is latex-free and often phthalate-free. However, the porosity changes from toy to toy so be sure to check the package to see if the item is phthalates free or not. TPE/TPR toys are compatible with all water-based lubricants. However, some TPE/TPR toys include silicone material, hence are not compatible with silicone-based lubricants, so be sure to do a spot test before using your silicone lube all over your toy. Our favorite TPE/TPR toys include the Triple Orgasm Vibrator and the Mini Vibro Tease Anal Plug.

Elastomer is soft, durable, and carries vibration well throughout the whole toy. This material is phthalate-free and hypoallergenic in its properties. However, it is somewhat porous so be sure to use a toy cleaner to keep your toy in top shape. Elastomer is compatible with all water-based lubes. However, some elastomer toys are not compatible with some silicone-based lubricants, so be sure to do a spot test before using your silicone lube all over your toy. Our favorite elastomer toys are the Rabbit Habit Dual Vibrator and the Deep Vibe Vibrating Sleeve.

Silicone is arguably one of the best soft toy materials available on the market today. It is phthalate-free, latex-free, nonporous and hypoallergenic in its properties. It is durable and carries vibration well throughout the toy. Silicone also warms up quickly and retains heat or cold really well. It can be cleaned with antibacterial soap and warm water or disinfected with a toy cleaner. If your silicone toy does not have a vibrating motor in it, you can disinfect it by boiling it in water for 3-5 minutes or putting it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Our top selling brands that use high-quality silicone are Lelo, Fun Factory, Jimmy Jane, and We-Vibe. When using silicone toys, always use a water-based lubricant such as our locally made Hathor Aphrodisia as silicone lubricants will melt into the silicone toys permanently.

Hard Materials:
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Stryene) is a type of hard plastic commonly found in sex toys. It is firm and light-weight and comes in a variety of colors. It is phthalate-free, nonporous and hypoallergenic. It can be cleaned with soap and water or wiped with a cotton ball dipped in some rubbing alcohol. ABS is compatible with all lube types. Our favorite ABS toys are the Jimmy Jane Iconic Bullet and the Bswish BGood Vibrating Dildo.

Glass is a popular sex toy material because it contains little surface drag and retains temperature really well.  It also is one of the most beautiful sex toy materials available today. These toys are usually made of pyrex or borosilicate glass, which are more resistant to chips and thermal shock than other types of glass. It is phthalate-free, hypoallergenic, and nonporous. It can be cleaned with soap and water or disinfected in boiling water for 3-5 minutes (if non-vibrating). Glass sex toys are compatible with all lube types. Our favorites are the beautiful Sunlight Glass Dildo and the Waterproof G-spot Vibrator.

Steel is similar to glass except it holds temperature better and has more weight, making it great for internal G-Spot or P-Spot massages. It has little surface drag, is phthalate-free, hypoallergenic, and nonporous. Steel toys are compatible with all types of lubes. Our favorite steel toys are the Fun Wand and the NJoy Plugs.
